Where We Hunt

Bali sits between two oceans, and the difference between a quiet reef day and a screaming bluewater session can be a 40-minute boat ride. Here are the five areas we run charters to, what's biting in each, and how long to plan for.

Spearfishing conditions and coastline at Padang Bai, Bali

Padang Bai

East Bali · about 1h 30m drive from Canggu

Our home port. Padang Bai's sheltered horseshoe bay means we launch even when the south coast is blown out. Inside the bay we hunt reef structure for snapper and grouper; ten minutes outside, the bottom drops to 80m and the pelagics show up. The mix makes it a great first day - warm up on reef fish, then push out for something that pulls back.

Target species

  • Giant trevally
  • Spanish mackerel
  • Mahi mahi
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Coral trout, snapper, grouper

Best for: All levels. Our most popular trip for first-timers and groups with mixed experience.

Spearfishing conditions and coastline at Candidasa, Bali

Candidasa

East Bali coast · about 1h 45m drive from Canggu

Candidasa gives you quick access to productive reefs, current lines, and cleaner offshore water than most first-timers expect. It is a strong bridge between protected reef hunting and proper pelagic sessions. We often run this zone when guests want fish variety without committing to the heaviest channel conditions.

Target species

  • Giant trevally
  • Yellowfin tuna
  • Spanish mackerel
  • Mahi mahi
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Snapper and grouper

Best for: Intermediate hunters and mixed groups wanting balanced reef + bluewater opportunities.

Spearfishing conditions and coastline at Nusa Penida, Bali

Nusa Penida

Offshore SE of Bali · about 1h drive from Canggu to Sanur + 45-60 min boat

Penida is where Bali turns serious. The island sits on the edge of deep oceanic channels that funnel current, bait, and big pelagics close to shore. Vis can hit 30 metres on a clean day. We run drift dives along the southern walls and live-bait the corners on the run-up of the tide. This is where most of our trophy fish come from.

Target species

  • Yellowfin tuna
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Mahi mahi
  • Spanish mackerel
  • Giant trevally

Best for: Intermediate to advanced spearos comfortable in current and diving 15m+. Beginners welcome on calmer southwest sites.

Spearfishing conditions and coastline at Amed, Bali

Amed

NE Bali · about 3h drive from Canggu

Black volcanic sand, jukung outriggers on the beach, and underwater topography that doesn't exist anywhere else on the island. Amed's walls drop fast and clean, vis is consistently 20m+, and the water is calm enough that we run trips year-round. Less pelagic action than Penida, but the structure dives are world-class - dogtooth holding tight to the ledges, big snapper and grouper in the cracks.

Target species

  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Coral trout
  • Mangrove jack & snapper
  • Grouper
  • Spanish mackerel
  • Giant trevally

Best for: Calm-water hunters, photographers, beginners building confidence. Excellent vis makes Amed our top pick for first dives.

Spearfishing conditions and coastline at North Bali, Bali

North Bali

Lovina / Pemuteran · about 3.5-4h drive from Canggu

The quiet side of the island. North Bali doesn't get the south's swell, so the ocean is glassy more days than not - and that means proper bluewater hunting. We run flasher rigs and slow-troll between drifts. Sailfish and big yellowfin show up here every dry season. Less pressured water, longer boat rides, bigger fish.

Target species

  • Yellowfin tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Sailfish
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Mahi mahi
  • Spanish mackerel

Best for: Experienced spearos chasing meat fish. Comfort with bluewater technique, flashers, and 20m+ dives recommended.
